What is your definition of "true wholesale"? Purchasing from a "true" wholesaler is usually touted as eliminating the middle man; but the truth is that if you're going to start small, many manufacturers and large wholesalers won't work with you because they require much larger quantities. Wholesale distributors (the so-called "middlemen") buy from the manufacturers or larger wholesalers and then break that down into smaller lots to sell to those who only want to purchase in small quantities (online retailers, auction sellers, etc).

First off, never risk more than you can afford to lose when getting started. Buying small quantity wholesale and turning a profit can be tough -- even impossible when selling on eBay.

Look for the products that the others ARE NOT selling. This is a key. Almost everyone starting out looks for the products everyone else IS selling and that will be killer. If you are new, chances are you competition can get it for less, sell it for less, and support the customer better than you can. So, look for the LEAST competition, not the MOST.

Good luck, it is going to be tough but it is not impossible. And, once you get the ball rolling it becomes easier and easier.

Try this site, they are recommended by ebay and I have sold over $9,000.00 worth of stuff through the list. You do pay a few bucks but it is worth it.

I think it is a great idea to start small, but I first believe you need to determine what products or type of products you want to sell. You need to know the products, market prices on these products and have a passion for the products. It is much easier to make money if you truely like the products and believe in the products you are selling and you must know what people are paying for these products.
Then evaluate each wholesaler and shop for VALUE...

I am not sure how the other industries work, but in our industry manufactures publish a wholesale price so everyone knows what the wholesale price is and us as a distributor discount off of that price. We have 2 levels in our industry - a Distributors who buys large quantities and sells at wholesale or below prices and the Wholesale price goes to business owners, stores, website owners etc.

Not sure what industry you want to get into, but do your homework and research...and it would be a good idea to have a business plan.
